Current project: leather armor

1–2 minutes

Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

My family are Renaissance Fair goers. Aside from covid years, I’ve been to the fair every year since 1996. That was my first exposure. I did need another, I was hooked.

I know the MD fair like the back of my hand. Want a hat, there are numerous shops. Want a set of fairy wings, we’ll go over here. Super cool pottery, Dancing Pig Pots. Need a cape, Ian’s shop. Yes, I keep in touch with owner, musicians and acting groups.

A few months ago while watching one of Bernadette’s videos, I stumbled across her recreations of Moirainne’s “shoulders” from Wheel of Time. Total rabbit hole moment. The I found Hazariel’s leather version. OMG. I must recreate this! But with MORE.

This girl loves dragons.

So my project is “the shoulders” with a chest piece, dragon on the front. The little fellow is going to be wrapped around a rose.

Leather tooling is a new hobby for me. And so far, sewing it together is… hard. Haha.

Oh, and the scale mail bits that go over my girly deltoids. But that part is easy. I’ve spent many an hour with a pair of needle nose pliers and a pile of jump rings.

I don’t have the bottom planned out yet. Thinking something along the lines of Xena’s skirt? We’ll see.

Happy Odin’s day, folks. Be awesome.
