Black lipstick

1–2 minutes

I have a teenage daughter. Oh man… I remember being her age, it sucked. I had plenty of false friends. I had a guy ditch me at a school dance one year. Truly, being 16/17 sucked. A lot.

About a year ago, I saw that parents were pitting into place “safe words”. Not yellow, Fred! Safe words but a code or phrase that kids could use if they needed to be able to step away from their friends without the fear of repercussions or losing face. The social aspect of teenagers is rough. Now more than ever. Social media. Cell phones in every pocket. It’s way harder than I had it.

“Black lipstick”. That is ours.

If she is at a friend’s and they are being jerks. If she feels uncomfortable and needs support. That’s it. That is our code.

Only rule, she can’t use it for tests at school.

I love goth princess. And she knows I have her back.
