When in doubt…

1–2 minutes

Just write. Write something. Write anything.

Try rewriting the same scene from a different pov. Different focus. From another character’s viewpoint. You might find something that works better. A year plus ago, I drafted “Something About A Diner” from third person pov. It was ok. But it was just ok. So I tucked it away in “the drawer” and left it alone.

Enter UCLA Extension and a few classes. The class in question was Dialogue and POV. I didn’t especially enjoy the class for reasons unrelated to topic. However, one of the assignments gave Diner a chance to get out of hibernation and take on some new characteristics. I rewrote it as a directed towards the reader, second person pov. It was actually a lot of fun to try on and I’ll very likely give it another run with other projects. I’m happy to say that I actually submitted the piece for consideration to an anthology. Haven’t been rejected yet! *finger crossed* If the owner likes it, it will be my first non-self published piece. Coming out of my comfort zone with that piece and putting myself out there for potential rejection…

Circling back around. If what you are doing isn’t working, try tweaking it. Don’t be afraid to stand on your head and look at it from a different perspective.

Stay safe and be well!
